Big Box fitness is finally taking a chance on Montbello in the Chambers Place Shopping Center. You know the shopping center as the home of Churches Chicken and the former Safeway at the intersection of Chambers and Green Valley Ranch Blvd. We live in the area and residents have been up in arms about our food desert since we only have one grocery store to serve our neighborhood of 40 thousand. Well I’ve been up in arms about the lack of other types of businesses in our neighborhood not just groceries! Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about fitness centers as well.
It was only this week while shopping in Glendale that I told my husband that I couldn’t believe that the old Ballys is now a 24 Hour Fitness. If you are up on the fitness scene you know that 24 Hr Fitness acquired several Bally’s in the Denver area converting die hard Bally’s members kicking and screaming. This is important because on the primary street (Colorado Blvd) there are not one 24 Hr fitness centers, but three! Also in Aurora there are also 4 fitness centers in a 5 mile radius (24 hr fitness, Lady Fitness, Inspire Fitness, and U-fit) Talk about disparity. Our “booming” and “diverse” neighborhood only has one – while the chicken restaurants thrive (that is another topic). If you are still sleep then you wouldn’t understand what I just said. So let’s get to it.
As of 2010 Montbello’s population is 60% people of color – many of which are homeowners. I think there is an unwritten thought that it is a Black crime ridden neighborhood, but it is really diverse with a mix of cultures and income levels. It is situated in a good location in North East Denver and next to the airport. On the fitness and activity side we have parks, safe side walks and one of the biggest public recreation centers in the city. Although we have access to business districts in neighboring Green Valley Ranch, Northfield, and Aurora – there is something about shopping in your own neighborhood. After living here for over 15 years the mix of businesses has changed a little with the array of liquor stores, pay day loans, nails, Chinese restaurants, and of course chicken. At least we have a Walmart right? Bottom line is that if you want more options then you have to get in your car and go – somewhere else. It feels as if we are forgotten – the RTD light skipped us, healthy grocery stores skipped us, what next?
Are you awake now? The complaint is that we are a hidden gem and gets red lined every time – until now. I just told you that Planet Fitness is coming! The best part of this deal is that we are finally getting a fitness center that also fits the budget of the community. For only $10 a month you will have access to unlimited workouts. Here is the proof if you still can’t believe it since it is now listed on the Planet Fitness web site.
